A Club With a Cause

"Helping others" and "community service" are often the hallmarks of high school clubs who seek to give students an opportunity to give back, while also earning service hours for college applications. The newly founded Club 361 hopes to do that – and more, with the help of students and staff members who want to step up and learn about leadership.

The club is based on mental and physical wellness, leadership, and service which are values that Indiana State Trooper Aaron Smith developed and worked on in his life.

"Club 361 was founded in honor of Indiana State Trooper Aaron Smith who was struck by a vehicle during a line-of-duty incident and tragically succumbed to his injuries EOW (end of watch) on June 28, 2023," said Student Resource Officer Joshua Jellison. Jellison explained that Indiana State Trooper Aaron Smith did not just serve in his community while he was on duty, he did so outside of being on duty.

Though the club involves the police and fire department, the club is for everyone. "Club 361 is not exclusive to those interested in law enforcement/military/firefighting," said Jellison. "We accept anybody who is interested in leading and serving their community. This club is open to any student who wants to become a part of something bigger."

Jellison shared his hope for the club. "Ultimately, we would like our members to return after college or even stay after high school and to serve or become a leader within their community or another, whether it be teaching, law enforcement, fire/EMS (Emergency Medical Services), dispatch, nurse, etc.," he said. "There are many opportunities to lead and serve the community of Hendricks County and ultimately this is what we want to see."

Students can get involved with the club by contacting Corporal Natalie Groth or Officer Jellison. The club meets during club days on SMART, as well as hosting meetings outside of school. "We also have the opportunity for students who are interested in the physical wellness piece to voluntarily work out with our PT instructors from Plainfield Police Department and Plainfield Fire Department," said Jellison.
