Finals Week
As the first semester comes to a close, Christmas break is in sight. Finals will begin next week, with the schedule as follows: Period 7 will test on the 19; Periods 1, 3 and 5 will test on the 20; and Periods 2, 4 and 6 will test on the 21.
"I recommend that students actually study a little," said Guidance Director Dave Owens. "That may sound obvious, but I speak to a lot of students who really don't study." Owens acknowledged that many students are unsure of how to study effectively, which can result in a 'What's the point?' mentality. He offered a piece of advice on how students should prepare.

"Studying and reviewing a little bit at a time a few days ahead is so much more effective to get a true grasp and retention of the materials," said Owens, stressing the importance of not cramming everything at the last minute.
Owens also recognized that many students struggle with test anxiety and mental fatigue, which can make it even harder to focus during exams. "They try to study and prepare, but get very nervous and lose confidence leading up to and during the exams, so it impacts their performance," he said. To combat this, he explained the steps students can take in order to succeed. "Continuing to study ahead, using different methods to prepare and good old positive thinking will often help to counter test anxiety," said Owens.
