Plainfield Football Boys Named Champions at Mid-State Conference
Competitive season proceeds after three-way tie
After more than a decade of playing together, the senior boys on Plainfield's varsity football team compete in their final high school season. Senior Brady Wachtel belongs to this group. "A good amount of the seniors have played together since 2013. I have been playing with those guys since we were in first grade," he said.
Against eight neighboring teams, Plainfield emerged in the top three at the Mid-State Conference. Plainfield, Decatur, and Martinsville each went undefeated until it was time to play one another. With Plainfield beating Martinsville, Martinsville beating Decatur, and Decatur beating Plainfield, the outcome was a triangle of competition. Tie or not, Wachtel is pleased to finish at the top. "In the end, we were named the champions in a share of it. It was pretty awesome for us to have that opportunity," he said.
Following this victory, the team defeated Anderson on the first of November. To stay in the game, the boys must continue to put forward their best effort. "We play until we lose now," said Wachtel. "In order to go to state, we have to win the next five games. There are no ties anymore. If we lose, we are done, and we go home."
Wachtel appreciates the student body's support for the team. "I love that my friends at school are involved," he said. "I think that they should continue to be because it supports the team and makes us feel like the work we put in each day is being rewarded."
Despite his sport being physically and mentally taxxing, Wachtel's motivation persists due to the team's community. "I go out there every day and practice with my brothers and with my family, and I know that they are suffering just as much as me," he said. "Knowing that they are there for me and knowing that I am not in it alone definitely helps me."
