Foreign Language Classes Teach Elementary Students

On November 17, foreign language classes traveled to the five elementary schools to introduce young students to new languages. Third-year French students, as well as fourth-year Spanish and German students, prepared slideshows, games and activities in order to teach introductory information and get younger students excited about studying foreign languages.

Spanish 4 senior Brianna Such explained that she enjoyed seeing the students involved with the activities. "Seeing that we were making an impact and giving them something they could have fun with was lovely," she said. "I definitely would do it again."

The field trip did not come without its challenges, however. "The most challenging part was the energy it took from me," said Such. "I don't know how elementary teachers can do that every day for hours because I would fall into hibernation after a while."

The annual foreign language field trip allows elementary school students to not only have fun with their classmates but also exposes them to valuable information about what language they would be interested in studying more long-term. "It's essential to be involved in the community by doing these events," noted Such. "By doing this, the kids get an insight into foreign languages and can start thinking about what language they might want to take in high school."
