Hispanic Culture Month
Every year in America, there is an entire month dedicated to those of Hispanic Heritage. With different foods and different traditions, there is a lot to celebrate the Hispanic community and their inspiring history.
Senior Yandel Calleja said, "For many Mexican Americans, just like myself and other Hispanic cultures, Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate their cultural heritage and identity. It's a time to showcase different Hispanic-rich traditions, history and contributions to the United States." Calleja uses this month to spread awareness and tell others about the annual celebration.
The duration of a month is very important because it gives people time to dive deep into the culture, history and contributions of Hispanic communities. Another reason to add is that it "lets people experience different cultures, and this can range from festivals, food, beliefs to much more," said Calleja.
With this history also comes traditions and holidays. "My favorite tradition my family does is probably the 'Day of the Dead – Dia de Los Muertos," said Celleja. "This is my favorite because a family member's death is not about weeping, but is a celebration of their existence, their accomplishments and their story."
Being bilingual is another asset that Hispanic culture teaches. Knowing more than one language is a tool that can be used for the rest of one's life, and with this ability can come many greater opportunities for jobs or careers.
"I think, for me, being Hispanic has a greater effect not just with being Hispanic itself but being given the opportunity to learn to speak another language as a kid," said Calleja. "Being Hispanic also has given me pride to carry around with me for the rest of my life. I don't think just being Hispanic has brought more opportunities to me, but being able to speak Spanish has given me a better chance at getting hired at a job. Speaking Spanish has also given me the opportunity to work with other kids who struggle with English and help them with schoolwork and stuff like that."
After all the traditions, it's important to spread awareness and let others in on the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Calleja said, "I think I can bring awareness to this month just by posting about it on social media, and talking about it with friends, because there is so much to learn that one simple message just won't get it across."
