How to get a Tutor

08/30/2023

To any student wanting to get extra help or assistance in a certain subject, peer tutoring is offered in several different ways, where one can get help from his or her fellow students in a difficult subject. Even if it's just to confirm that a student understands the lesson being taught, tutors can be helpful in keeping up this school year.

Not only are there expectations for the tutor, but there are also some for the student getting tutored. "The expectations for meeting with a tutor are to come to the tutoring session prepared and ready to ask questions and work on the subjects you need a little help with," said National Honor Society Advisor Adam Ferguson. "You should have any classwork you need with you, access to your device, etc."

Regardless of how difficult a subject is, tutors are always willing to help as long as the student is willing to learn. "You should expect a tutor to help you work through your coursework or explain content in various ways to help you learn based on your style. They are not answer machines and instead will guide you through your work," said Ferguson. "They will be honest with you and admit when they also don't know how to do something but will demonstrate how they try to find answers or where they go to find out how to better understand the content."

If a student is having trouble finding a tutor, it is best for them to talk to a person in charge who can direct them to one. "You can talk to your teacher or guidance counselor and they will email me to help find a tutor," said Ferguson. "You can also reach out to me directly. Try to figure out the best time to get help (before or after school, or a period during the school day)."

There are tutors for every subject and tutors for every style of teaching. Teachers, staff and tutors alike want students to pass their classes, so it shouldn't be laborious to find a tutor who suits the way they learn.

"Tutors can either help explain it in a different way or provide ideas for how to do well in those learning environments, sometimes it is just learning organizational, time management, and note-taking skills," said Ferguson. "The biggest issue is the stigma around tutoring. Students who seek help are not dumb and should not feel embarrassed. Getting help in classes when you need it is just advocating for your own success and you should never feel embarrassed for doing everything you can to succeed."
