Odd Occupations

Waking up, going to school, going to work and finally going to sleep.

The same boring schedule day after day, with the same boring job that squeezes all the time and fun out of the day.

Many students experience this, working at jobs like McDonald's or Starbucks. However, there is a small percentage of high school students who work at jobs that a lot of people don't do or just don't know about.

Junior Aubrey Bennett is among those who have a more unique job -- she spent her weekends working as a cashier for Spirit Halloween in the fall. "I worked at Spirit Halloween since the beginning of August," said Bennett. "I continued to work there because most of my coworkers are really nice and so are the managers. They really care about me and my well-being." Many interesting stories and things came along with working at a store like Spirit Halloween, including dress-up days for the employees. "Someone even donated $50 to our Spirit of Children organization to pour blood on an employee," said Bennett. Although Spirit Halloween was only open from August to November, Bennett hoped to work there next year as well.

Another student with an interesting job is sophomore Gretchen Stefanski, who works as a lifeguard at Splash Island during the summer. Previously on the swim team and missing the environment, Stefanski applied as a lifeguard when her friend told her about all the fun they were having.

"I enjoy this job since I'm by the pool all day and I get to hear people's silly conversations," said Stefanski. "An amazing quote that I heard someone say and I still remember to this day is, 'I'm not a stalker, I'm an unemployed detective.' I just love that." Since learning life saving techniques is required to become a lifeguard, Stefanski would categorize it as a medical occupation, which is an area in which she would like to pursue a career in the future.

An even more unexpected job for a high school student would be working at Ash and Oak Wedding Barn. "I clean after the wedding, drive people from the parking lot to the barn on a golf cart and I assist in wedding coordinating," said senior Madeline Bugler. Being family friends with the owners, Bugler is able to experience the excitement of wedding planning and helping make someone's wedding a memorable day.

Along with helping plan the weddings, Bugler gets to also experience small parts of them. "A couple of weeks ago, a couple decided to leave everything at the end of the night, so I went home with an entire sheet cake," said Bugler.

With her love for wedding planning and everything that goes along with it, Bugler would love to continue in this job field later on in the future. "I love weddings. I enjoy work that is irregular and not mundane," she said. "I thrive on chaos and problem-solving."
