Unified Track and Field startup
Track season is starting up. Unified Track and Field is an inclusive athletic program that brings together athletes with and without intellectual disabilities to compete as teammates.
People interested in joining the Unified Track and Field Team should run to sign up by contacting Coach April Sims of the Unified Track and Field Team in room F109, with a physical and final forms filled out, with the season starting March 10th.
"It's part of the Special Olympics movement, which promotes inclusion and unity through sports," said Coach Sims. "Unified Track and Field is unique because it combines sports with social inclusion, using athletics as a tool to create stronger, more understanding communities."
The pressure may seem daunting at first but it is rather impactful, encouraging physical activity, a better understanding of others, and leadership skills. "The team focuses on ability not disability, building friendships and confidence," said Sims "It helps build social skills like communication, collaboration, social networking and teamwork. You are exposed to new challenges and experiences you might not get inside the classroom."
